Race Highlight


The Challenge at Mountwood is the third race of the 2026 season for both WVMBA and OMBC, with points counting toward both series. OMBC, Ohio’s oldest mountain bike series, brings strong competition and a welcoming racing community. Mountwood Park offers challenging terrain, excellent trails, and a classic race atmosphere. WVMBA Series Race Categories


Each WVMBA Series race lets participants choose a category based on fitness, skill, and expected course time:

  1. Pro / Cat 1 – ~21 miles, 2,750 ft elevation gain
  2. Designed for experienced riders ready for a challenging course.
  3. Cat 2 / E-Bike – ~14 miles, 1,750 ft elevation gain
  4. Suitable for intermediate riders and Class 1 pedal-assist e-bikes, offering a balanced challenge.
  5. Cat 3 / Beginner – ~7 miles, 900 ft elevation gain
  6. Ideal for new racers or those seeking a less intense experience.

WVMBA Licenses / Membership:


  • No USA Cycling License Required: WVMBA racers do not need a USA Cycling license this season.
  • WVMBA Membership Encouraged: Supporting WVMBA helps ensure the organization’s long-term future.
  • Member Discounts: Annual members receive a $5 discount for each race entry. Non-members pay full price when registering.

  • Important: Obtain your WVMBA membership before registering for any race. Memberships purchased after registration cannot be refunded.

WVMBA Category Pricing


  • Consistent Pricing: All races have a uniform price to maximize the prize purse and simplify race-day registration. Cat 1 Juniors receive full payout opportunities.
  • Cat 1 Races (All Ages): $50 (+ online registration fees)
  • Cat 2 & Cat 3 Adult Categories: $50, increasing to $60 the Monday before the race (+ online fees)
  • Cat 2 & Cat 3 Junior Categories: $30, increasing to $40 the Monday before the race (+ online fees)
  • WVMBA Annual Members: $25 and $45, increasing to $35 and $55 the Monday before the race
  • Price Increases: All race entries increase by $10 on the Sunday a week before the event. Online registration closes Friday before the race.
  • Early Registration Note: Starting April 20th, all registration fees increase by $10. Registration closes at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 24th to submit the final roster to the timing company, Miles of Smiles.
  • Same-Day On-Site Registration: Available for cash or check only. Fees are $60 for adults and $40 for children.

Course Information


The Challenge at Mountwood trails are known for their “nice old school single track” design, featuring plenty of elevation gain. Riders can expect a mix of challenging climbs and flowing descents that make for an exciting biking experience. The course will remain largely the same as last year’s layout for all three race distances, with only minor adjustments made at the promoter’s discretion. Updated course information for the 2026 series will be posted here once available.


Directions to start line: Mountwood Park is located about 12 miles east of Parkersburg, WV, on US 50. The 2,600-acre park features over 30 miles of mostly single-track trails, known for being some of the best-maintained in the state. WVMBA Series Prizes


  • Cat 1 / Pro Categories: Top three finishers in all five subcategories compete for cash prizes. Men’s Open and Women’s Open divisions receive equal payouts.
  • Cat 2, Cat 3, & E-Bikes: Top three finishers in each subcategory receive prizes or special awards, determined by the promoter.
  • Award Ceremony: All awards for the Challenge at Mountwood will be presented after races conclude at the Carson Station Pavilion.
